Storing outdoor cushions when the weather turns

An outdoor cushion may tolerate some splashes without being designed to stay soaked. Sensible storage starts with its care label and a place where the whole cushion can dry thoroughly.

Check which parts are washable

The cover and filling may need different treatment. Establish whether a zip means the cover is genuinely removable for cleaning or simply forms part of its construction. Do not assume a large cushion insert can go in the washing machine just because its cover can.

Remove dust and leaves before cleaning. Treat marks according to the fabric instructions and test compatible products in an unobtrusive area. Avoid mixing cleaners or applying a strong online cleaning recipe to a finish that may include a water-repellent treatment.

Dry the inside as well

After rain or washing, separate cushions from surfaces that hold moisture. Position them as the manufacturer recommends to help drying, changing the point of support if needed. A cover that feels dry does not prove that all the water has left the filling.

Do not pile damp cushions together or immediately close them in a bag. Persistent smells, extensive marks or damaged filling call for checking the recommended care rather than disguising the problem with fragrance. Trapping moisture for weeks makes a clean, pleasant cushion harder to recover later.

Store their real volume

Measure the complete set before buying a storage chest. Thick cushions occupy more room than folded covers, and prolonged compression may affect their shape. Check that you can retrieve the lowest cushion without emptying the whole chest whenever you want to sit outside.

A chest kept outdoors must be suitable for that use and position. Water resistance does not always mean a sealed interior without condensation. Check seals, any specified ventilation and the contents themselves, particularly after prolonged rain or changes in temperature. Leave enough space to open the lid without catching nearby furniture.

Make the daily routine easy

If weather changes frequently, locate storage near the exit without obstructing it. Bringing in two cushions each evening may be more practical than keeping six outside permanently. Remove lightweight pieces whenever wind could carry them away, and give stored items an occasional inspection between seasons.
