Decorating

Using wallpaper in a small area

A small area lets you enjoy a distinctive wallpaper without covering the whole home. The pattern, edges and wall preparation still need a complete plan.

Choose somewhere you can see it properly

The wall behind a desk, an entrance area or part of a bedroom may work. Notice how much furniture and doors will conceal. A large motif may lose its effect if only a narrow strip remains visible between objects.

Ask for a sample that lets you understand the pattern repeat. Compare it with nearby skirting, frames and fabrics. A screen may not reproduce the actual colour or surface sheen, particularly where the design includes metallic or textured details.

Calculate with the pattern, not area alone

Roll width, wall height and repeat type affect the quantity required. A design needing pattern matching can generate substantial offcuts. Follow the manufacturer’s calculation guidance and check whether rolls should come from the same batch.

Include openings and corners in the hanging plan. Do not assume every offcut can be used in any position. Before cutting, decide where the motif starts so prominent edges receive a considered finish rather than an accidental slice.

Inspect the wall beneath

A damp, flaking or uneven wall needs attention before being covered. Wallpaper should not conceal moisture without investigating its cause. Check the preparation and adhesive specified for the product and surface.

In rented accommodation, confirm installation is permitted. Self-adhesive wallpaper can damage some finishes when removed, even when described as removable. Test only where authorised and keep both installation and removal instructions.

Give the design room

With a strong pattern, a simple lamp and a few surrounding objects may be enough. You do not need to repeat its colours in every accessory. View it from the adjoining room, since that often reveals how much attention it commands.

Consider cleaning and exposure to splashes too. Wallpapers differ in the care and locations they tolerate. Choosing a small area makes the project more manageable but does not alter the material’s limitations. Check those before selecting a bathroom or kitchen position.
