Check the actual conditions
Identify radiators, vents, blinds and sockets. Do not cover equipment or restrict its ventilation without checking the instructions. An inward-opening window needs more free space than fixed glazing, and cleaning the glass requires access too.
Watch the light through the day. Direct sun can heat a seat or affect sensitive materials. Choose plants for their particular needs rather than assuming every position beside glass will suit them.
If you want a seat
Confirm that the bench or structure is designed to support people. A decorative shelf does not become seating when a cushion is placed on it. Consider height, depth, stability and ease of standing. A custom-built structure needs appropriate construction and fixings rather than an improvised furniture arrangement.
Around low windows or in homes with children, avoid creating easy access to a dangerous opening. Maintain suitable window safety measures and do not rely on an insect screen to prevent falls. The layout needs to begin with that condition rather than adding it as an afterthought.
If you want a useful surface
A small table can benefit from the light without blocking the entire window. Check that curtains still move and that opening the window does not require removing several objects. Under plant pots, use protection compatible with the finish and check for spills.
Do not fill the sill until the outside view that made the position appealing disappears. A small group may be enough. Leave room to clean without a lengthy dismantling operation, particularly where condensation or dust needs regular attention.
Test before commissioning furniture
Mark the intended volume with boxes during a supervised trial, then remove them. Sit nearby, open the window and operate the blind. This reveals conflicts that a width measurement alone will not show.
If no function fits without inconvenience, keeping the window clear is a sound decision. Daylight and the view already contribute to the room, even when there is no furniture underneath.
