Keeping track of what is in your freezer

A freezer inventory can be a simple sheet of paper. Its usefulness depends on updating it when a portion comes out, rather than turning every drawer into a complicated database.

Start with a short review

Choose a moment before shopping and inspect drawers in turn so they stay open no longer than necessary. Write down the contents of each identifiable package and the number of portions. If you cannot identify something or remember when it was stored, do not invent a date to complete the list.

Check the freezer instructions and food packaging. An inventory does not establish that a meal is safe or correct a break in the cold chain. Keep original dates and instructions visible, and follow the relevant official storage and defrosting advice for each product. Organising is a way to track food, not a substitute for handling it safely.

Record quantities you can subtract

Soup: four portions is more useful than several containers. If the containers hold different amounts, record that distinction. You could draw four boxes and cross one out when removing a portion. The method should work with one hand occupied, without requiring an app nobody else in the household uses.

Keep the list where meal planning happens. A sheet in a kitchen folder and a shared phone note can work equally well. In a shared home, agree that the person taking something out updates the quantity immediately, before forgetting what they used. A slightly untidy accurate list beats a beautifully formatted outdated one.

Give each group an address

Assign broad areas such as vegetables, cooked preparations and bread. Drawers do not have to contain exactly the same balance every week. A general label helps locate a group while allowing flexibility for packages of different shapes. Leave the appliance's required ventilation areas unobstructed.

Use freezer-suitable containers in the portion sizes you normally need. Identify the contents, date and quantity before putting them inside, while writing is still easy. Flat packages can use space efficiently when their contents and packaging suit that position. Avoid squeezing containers so tightly together that removing one disturbs everything around it.

Use the list to choose dinner

Before cooking, check which preparations should be used first and plan safe defrosting. Do not leave a container on the counter all day because you found it too late. Follow the food's instructions and relevant food-safety recommendations instead.

Review the list when adding groceries or a batch of prepared food. If corrections become illegible, start a clean sheet containing only what remains inside.
