Check what happens when it opens
A lift-up seat needs clear space above and may require moving cushions every time. Drawers occupy floor space when extended, while doors need an unobstructed swing. Mark these movements as well as the bench's closed footprint.
Test access with shoes, the rug and the front door in their usual positions. If putting away a scarf requires moving three other things, it will probably end up on the seat instead. Easy access matters especially in a place you pass through while hurrying out of the home.
Confirm it is intended for sitting
Not every low storage unit is designed to support a person. Check the manufacturer's intended use and load limit rather than judging by the thickness of the top or a photograph. Inspect assembly and stability on your particular floor as well.
For a model with a lid, examine its mechanism and instructions to prevent unexpected closing. Where children live, access to the interior and entrapment hazards deserve particular attention. An arbitrary storage chest should not be turned into a play bench simply because its height appears convenient.
Store things that belong there
Choose a specific use, such as walking accessories or frequently worn dry shoes. Mixing damp footwear with clean textiles does not make good use of a closed compartment. Consider ventilation, cleaning and whether dividers or trays can be removed when dirty.
Measure larger belongings before buying. A long umbrella may not fit even when the bench looks broad outside, and a narrow opening can make bags awkward to insert. Usable internal volume is often smaller than the overall dimensions suggest, particularly around hinges and dividers.
Allow room to sit and stand
If the purpose is putting on shoes, test the height and depth with the people who will use it. You need to lean forward and move your legs without hitting a console opposite. A bench squeezed against another piece may lose the comfort that justified buying it.
Follow any anchoring requirements and keep the exit clear. If you only need to store two pairs of shoes, a simple bench and accessible tray may serve the routine better.
