Small spaces

Making dining space in a small kitchen

Eating in a small kitchen can be comfortable when the table does not compete with every drawer. Decide how many people normally use it and what must remain operational during a meal.

Test the kitchen while working

Open the fridge, oven and dishwasher through their actual travel. Include an occupied chair in the trial. A table that fits with every front closed may prevent you removing a tray or reaching an appliance.

Notice where ingredients and plates are put down. If the table doubles as preparation space, material and cleaning matter. Do not place it so close to a heat source that it violates the appliance’s clearances.

Choose the format around use

A small freestanding table can move, while a folding top frees floor space when closed. The latter needs suitable installation and somewhere for its contents to go. A narrow wall-facing top may serve one person without being equivalent to a dining area for several.

Test the height with the actual chair or stool. Check foot support, knee room and ease of sitting down. Do not choose high seating solely because it appears visually lighter; it must feel stable and comfortable for its users.

Store chairs realistically

Folding chairs can help with visitors, but they need accessible, safe storage. Behind several boxes, they cease to be a quick solution. Everyday seating should involve few movements before it can be used.

A bench can sit close to a wall, although some people may need to move for others to enter and leave. Test that interaction before choosing it. Capacity depends on how people sit as well as the bench’s length.

Allow room to clean

Crumbs and splashes should not collect in an unreachable gap. Avoid fitting furniture so tightly that cleaning requires dismantling the arrangement. If a table has wheels, check its locks and stability according to the design.

Do not make everyday furniture accommodate every occasional gathering. Using another area when visitors arrive may be more comfortable than compromising the kitchen all the time.
