Small spaces

Furnishing a small bedroom with breathing room

In a small bedroom, the bed usually determines almost everything else. Choosing by mattress width alone, without the whole frame, can leave less access than expected.

Begin with the actual footprint

Measure the headboard, legs and any projecting edges. Include drawer travel if the bed has storage. Mark that volume on the floor and check how the room and wardrobe doors open.

Test access on both sides according to who uses the bed. Putting it against a wall may save a route but makes bed-making and entry from that side harder. Decide whether you accept that everyday trade-off rather than judging only the tidier floor plan.

Reduce pieces, not important functions

A small bedside table may suffice for a book and glass. If you keep glasses, medication or other personal items nearby, provide an appropriate, safe place for them. Removing a useful surface only to leave everything on the floor is not much of an improvement.

Check whether a chest duplicates capacity already available in the wardrobe. Organising that interior may free an entire piece of furniture. Conversely, replacing everything with tiny versions can create numerous small surfaces that are awkward to maintain.

Keep access and ventilation

Do not block vents, heating equipment or windows with storage. Check sockets and charger routes too. Cables should remain outside the walking area and should not be crushed beneath the bed.

Tall furniture still needs its specified anchors in a narrow room. Putting heavy objects high up to use every centimetre can make access harder and worsen stability concerns. Store heavier belongings where they can be handled safely.

Look from the doorway and the bed

Simple curtains or a quiet palette may reduce visual fragmentation, but they do not replace a usable arrangement. Keep some surfaces clear rather than assigning a different function to every wall.

Live with the main change for a few days before buying another piece. Moving the bed or removing a chair that collects clothing may achieve more than extra storage. Assess whether cleaning, dressing and making the bed now require fewer manoeuvres.
