What to check before washing curtains

Taking curtains down is enough work without discovering afterwards that the chosen wash is unsuitable. Plan the whole process before removing the first hook.

Folds in white curtain fabric

Read the label for every layer

Do not decide how to wash curtains from their visible fabric alone. A panel can combine face fabric, lining, interlining and a blackout coating with different requirements. Find the label and model information, especially where coatings are involved. A cotton face does not guarantee that the assembled curtain tolerates hot water. Care symbols describe the limits of the finished item. If information is missing or professional cleaning is specified, ask before treating a delicate machine cycle as a universal solution.

Decide where they will dry

Check how much space is available for drying without bunching the panels together. A large wet curtain is heavy and may exceed what a small drying rack can support. Also check the washing machine's capacity and the load allowed for the selected programme; do not compress panels simply to close the door. If only one can be washed at a time, plan the sequence so that a wet curtain is not left waiting in the drum while the first occupies all available drying space.

Record how they are hanging

Photograph the heading and place removed hooks or fittings in a container. Temporarily identify the left and right panels if they are not identical. Inspect seams, hems and areas exposed to strong sunlight, which may have become fragile. Use a stable stepladder and get help with pieces that are difficult to handle. Do not pull from below or stand on a wheeled chair to reach the track. Removing a panel carefully preserves both the textile and the fittings needed to put it back.

Washing cannot repair every problem

Remove loose dust using a compatible method before laundering. Treat a stain only if the fabric and label permit the product, testing in an inconspicuous place first. Follow the dose, temperature and spin instructions. Extra detergent can be difficult to rinse from a large volume of fabric. Do not combine bleaching agents with other cleaners in pursuit of a brighter white. If sunlight has faded a curtain, a stronger wash will not necessarily restore the colour and may worsen the fabric's weakness.

Rehang according to the fabric

Dry and iron only as the care label allows. Some curtains can finish drying while hanging; others should not place their wet weight on the hooks. Do not turn one useful technique into a rule for every material. Before refitting, clean the accessible track and check that all the fittings are present. Assess the drop once the panels are dry instead of stretching seams to force the original length. Keep a note of the successful programme beside the care instructions for next time.
