Cleaning a fabric sofa by its care label

A zip does not make a cushion cover machine washable. Identify the upholstery and its care instructions before reaching for water or stain remover.

Find the instructions for the complete sofa

Look beneath a cushion, beside a seam or on the sofa's underside for its care label. If you cannot find one, check the manufacturer's documentation for the model. Fibre content is helpful, but it cannot tell the whole story: dyes, finishes, filling and upholstery construction also affect what cleaning the piece can tolerate.

Some labels use cleaning codes, while others show laundry symbols. Check unfamiliar codes against the manufacturer's instructions rather than guessing. A removable cover is not necessarily washable, either; its zip may be intended only for assembly. If the information is missing, limit the first step to removing loose dust and ask for advice before applying moisture.

Remove loose dirt before treating marks

Use a clean upholstery attachment on the vacuum, with suction appropriate to the fabric. Work over seats, backs and joins without pulling at threads or fringes. Lift cushions only if they are designed to be removed. Vacuuming crumbs between sections is more effective than pushing them around with a damp cloth.

For fabrics with a pile, including some velvets, avoid stiff brushes and aggressive strokes. Try a discreet area and inspect the result first. Vacuuming will not remove every stain, but it helps distinguish an actual mark from accumulated dust and prevents loose dirt spreading when moisture is introduced later.

Blot a spill without spreading it

Press a clean, dry white cloth gently against a fresh liquid spill. Move to a dry section as the cloth absorbs the liquid. Vigorous rubbing can spread the mark and disturb the fabric surface. Lift solid residue carefully rather than pressing it further into the weave. Work patiently instead of repeatedly scrubbing the same patch.

What happens next depends on the label, not a homemade cleaning recipe. If wet cleaning is permitted, use the specified product and test it in a hidden area. Let that test dry before judging colour and texture. Fabric that looks unchanged while wet can develop a visible ring as it dries.

Keep moisture and drying under control

Do not soak a cushion in pursuit of a stubborn spot. Filling can hold water after the surface seems dry. Follow the manufacturer's stated amount and method. Some upholstery needs a whole panel treated to prevent rings, while other materials cannot tolerate that approach. More water is not automatically a more thorough clean.

Where machine washing is allowed, follow the cover's temperature, programme and drying instructions. Do not add heat simply to hurry things along, or force a shrunken cover back over its filling. Ventilate the room and allow the pieces to dry completely before use or reassembly, following any specific fitting instructions supplied with the sofa.

Know when to stop experimenting

An old stain, colour transferring onto the cloth or an unidentified fabric is a good reason to consult an upholstery cleaner. Do not layer different stain removers. A particular outdoor fabric's tolerance of bleach says nothing about your own sofa. Keep the care sheet with the model name so that the next spill does not begin another guessing exercise.
