Identify the installed product
Look for the brand and range on an invoice, a spare carton or the home's paperwork. Laminate products do not all have the same water resistance. Even where that feature is advertised, installation and maintenance conditions still apply. Do not interpret water resistant as permission to flood the floor. If the model is unknown, begin with dry cleaning and ask before trying steam, wax or treatments that leave a coating. A room's previous owner may have kept a useful care sheet with the remaining boards.
Remove gritty particles first
Sweep with a soft tool or vacuum using the appropriate hard-floor setting and attachment. Inspect wheels and the head for particles that could scratch as you work. Pay attention to the entrance, beneath the dining table and beside balcony doors. Moving a mop directly over hard debris can distribute it around the room. Where building work has left substantial dust, check the installer's advice before using the ordinary maintenance method. That situation may involve residues different from the everyday crumbs and dust the routine is designed for.
Use controlled moisture, not puddles
Choose a compatible cleaner at its recommended dose and a well-wrung mop where damp cleaning is permitted. Work in sections and remove excess water. Do not leave a bucket dripping on the floor or park a wet mop beside the skirting. Edges, joints and door transitions deserve particular attention. If a mark needs more work, treat that area as instructed rather than wetting the entire room more heavily to make the session feel thorough. A visible sheen of standing water is not evidence of better cleaning.
Steam permission is product-specific
Some manufacturers permit steam on particular ranges under defined conditions; others do not. Use it only where your exact flooring expressly allows it, with the specified attachment and procedure. Permission for another range from the same brand is insufficient. Do not add oil or wax to restore shine without checking either: laminate does not need the treatment of an oiled timber floor. If a film appears, investigate cleaner residue before deciding that the finish has worn away. Repeated product application can make that confusion worse.
Prevent problems at busy spots
Fit suitable protection beneath furniture feet and lift pieces when moving them. Check that rug backings are compatible and not trapping moisture. Attend promptly to water from a plant pot, spilled drink or pet bowl. Raised joints or swelling are not a reason to mop again to even out the appearance; find the moisture source and seek advice. Keeping the product instructions allows you to adjust maintenance when a room's use changes without borrowing advice intended for an entirely different surface.
