Home care

Deciding whether a pillow can be washed

A pillowcase and a pillow's filling can require completely different care. Before using the washing machine, establish which component tolerates water and how it must be dried.

Find the filling's instructions

Remove the bedding pillowcase and distinguish an added protector from the original cover. Look for instructions for the pillow itself, not only the textile wrapped around it. Foam, latex, feathers and synthetic fibres do not automatically share one cleaning method. Even a single brand can have exceptions. Some TEMPUR products, for example, allow cover washing but not washing the inner material, while particular models have different guidance. Identifying the model stops a general rule becoming a specific mistake that cannot easily be reversed afterwards.

Inspect before washing

Examine seams, zips and weakened areas. A small opening can release filling during laundering and create problems for both the pillow and the machine. Deep moisture, a stain through several layers or persistent odour deserves a check of the recommended care before soaking. A pillow that has lost its shape or no longer feels comfortable is not necessarily restored by detergent. Separating cleanliness from physical wear helps decide whether treatment is worthwhile or whether a replacement would address the actual problem more directly.

Where machine washing is allowed

Follow the permitted temperature, programme and load directions. Check your washer's instructions for bulky items too: fitting through the door does not mean there is enough room for washing and rinsing. Do not improvise an unbalanced load or add objects to compensate without the appliance guidance. Use an appropriate detergent dose and avoid unauthorised treatments. If the washer reports a problem during the cycle, follow its procedure instead of forcing repeated spins with a very heavy item. The care label and machine limits both matter.

Allow realistic drying time

Plan what you will sleep on while the pillow finishes drying. Tumble dry only where authorised and at the correct setting. For air drying, position it as the manufacturer directs and inspect different areas, not merely the outer cover. The interior may remain damp after the fabric seems dry. Do not enclose it in a waterproof protector to use it early or place it beside intense heat. Where adequate drying is unavailable, professional cleaning or another authorised option may make more sense than a rushed home wash.

Make the next check easier

Launder pillowcases and protectors according to their labels and dry every layer completely before refitting. Avoid resting wet hair on materials that do not tolerate moisture. Keep the model information rather than cutting off and discarding every label. There is no need to invent a universal replacement deadline: consider condition, available cleaning and comfort. If a problem cannot be resolved by the authorised method, seek advice or replace the item instead of accumulating household treatments inside its filling, where removal is difficult to assess.
